Assistant General Manager

Originally from the Ann Arbor area, Jono developed his passion for hospitality while pursuing degrees in vocal performance at Grand Valley State University and the University of Michigan. He was first introduced to wine while working for the Amway Hotel Collection in Grand Rapids. After several years balancing careers in music and hospitality, he transitioned fully into the hospitality and wine world in 2022, later spending three years at Le Suprême in the Book Tower in Detroit as Assistant General Manager and Sommelier. Now at Echelon Kitchen & Bar as Assistant General Manager, Jono brings a guest-first approach to the restaurant’s day-to-day hospitality and service, with wine remaining an important part of his role and background. He views wine as an extension of the dining experience, complementing the food rather than competing with it. Drawn to producers who farm organically or biodynamically and embrace minimal-intervention practices, he gravitates toward wines that authentically express their sense of place. Working alongside Executive Chef and Partner Joseph VanWagner and the Echelon team, Jono helps create thoughtful dining experiences that introduce guests to both celebrated and lesser-known wine regions. His philosophy is rooted in making hospitality approachable, engaging, and deeply connected to the people and places behind the experience.
